Don’t make the rookie mistake of calling this Mexico’s Independence Day. That’s September 16th. The 5th of May commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French. So, you might be thinking “Hey, it’s the French”... but back in 1862 the French were a force to be reckoned with. The holiday is recognized primarily in the Mexican state Puebla and parts of the United States with a significant Mexican population or with those of us who just love Margaritas on a Terrace overlooking the beautiful city of New Orleans.
We look forward to Cinco de Mayo every year. Each year we have a growing number of events and festivities as a celebration of Mexican culture, food, music, beverages, and customs unique to Mexico. Several cities throughout the U.S. will hold parades and concerts. There are many fun events in New Orleans and you can get a taste by following this link to the best events for Cinco de Mayo.
